The Transformative Power of Art
These eight classes will take one through a visual artistic curriculum of self-development with exercises useful for working as a parent, teacher, therapist, artist, art educator, development coach, counselor, or nurturer of any kind. Mostly these sessions are for one’s own inner development and self-transformation.
Veil Painting and the Art of Transparent Color
An Introduction to Wet-on-Dry Watercolor Painting
These three, one-and-a-half hour classes are for those interested in learning the basics of the wet-on-dry watercolor approach, popularly referred to as veil painting. There will be instruction in preparation, application, techniques in watercolor medium, essentials of color theory and future theme suggestions. We will aim at completing two pictures during this course.

The Art and Individuality of Color
An Introduction to the Color Theory, Painting Indications and Training Sketches of Rudolf Steiner
These six online sessions will give an overview of Rudolf Steiner’s theory of color and his radically new approach to painting, beginning with indications for the First Goetheanum cupola paintings and artistic training sketches. Working in pastel and/or watercolor we will explore these themes by way of lecture, demonstration, conversation and engaged studio painting.
The Nine "Nature Mood" Training Sketches
for Painters by Rudolf Steiner
We will follow up on 'The Art and Individuality of Color: Rudolf Steiner’s Color Theory and his Painting Indications for Artists', and go deeper into these color indications by taking up the nine training sketches as a starting point for a renewed art of painting. Six, one-and-a-half-hour sessions will include illustrated lectures, demonstrations, studio art sittings and question and answer periods. Participants will gain practical experience and understanding in “painting out of the color”.

The First Goetheanum
The First Goetheanum is an incredibly important historic building designed by Rudolf Steiner in Switzerland and constructed by workers from dozens of countries during the fighting of the First World War. Like the Temple of Solomon, it no longer exists, destroyed by fire on New Yearʻs Eve 1922-23. It incorporated groundbreaking innovations in sacred architecture and realized the aspirations for a “total work of art.” Explore this remarkable building with someone who was involved with the renovations of 1998.
The Art of Chalkboard Drawing
Waldorf Techniques and Curriculum for Teachers and Parents
Blackboard drawing is a vital medium in the art of teaching. From the elementary grades right through high school the visual storytelling that takes place on the blackboard allows for a deeper learning that can occur beyond words and numbers; what can be experienced through colors and forms, in pictures. Pictorial thinking is a critical capacity for keeping alive and nurturing the imagination throughout childhood and into adult life.

The Four Large Watercolors
Painting themes based on Rudolf Steiner’s originals of 100 years ago
On the centennial of these festive-themed pictures, four online painting sessions will work with their formative color stories. New Life, Three Crosses, Archetypal Plant and Archetypal Man/Animal will be explored in connection with the festival times of year. Van James will guide beginners, intermediate and experienced artists through these color-imaginations of the circle of the seasons and the world of the colors.
Form Drawing for Teachers
The How, the Why, and the When of a Linear Language of Form in Education
What is the underlying importance of Form Drawing?
How does it benefit the growing child?
Why is it taught in Steiner-Waldorf schools and when (at what grade levels) is it appropriate and most beneficial?
We will address these questions and many more in this practical online art course for teaching children the creative art of form drawing.

Teaching Art History
Engaging Our Inner Life with Art, Cultural History and The Evolution of Consciousness
This online course will present an overview of Art History in eight sessions particularly designed for educators interested in teaching adolescent students. It will include why this subject is important at this age and how it can be presented in a way that engages the young person at a critical time in their inner development. We will explore the History of Art by looking at painting and sculpture from different cultural periods.
Rudolf Steiner’s Seven “Friedwart” Sketches:
Painting Motifs for Teaching the Adolescent and Training Oneself in the Art of Color
One hundred years ago, in 1923 Rudolf Steiner gave seven pastel sketches as themes for adolescent students to work with in watercolor painting. These included a sunrise and sunset, trees in sunny weather and trees in stormy weather, a tree by a waterfall, a profile head study, and a mother and child motif. They have since become part of a painting training for artists. What is the significance of these pictures as artistic exercises?

Black & White Drawing Workshop: Part 1
These sessions for adolescents and interested adults will introduce various techniques in the art of black and white drawing in order to develop themes that arise out of the dynamics of light and darkness. Basic exercises will lead on to more challenging compositions and individual projects.
Black & White Drawing Workshop: Part 2
These sessions for adolescents and interested adults will introduce various techniques in the art of black and white drawing in order to develop themes that arise out of the dynamics of light and darkness. Basic exercises will lead on to more challenging compositions and individual projects.

Mandala Workshop:
Learning about Ourself and the World
These four drawing and journaling sessions will explore the history and practice of the mandala (“essence container” in Sanskrit) but mostly we will engage in actual hands-on artistic work in order to learn more about the magic of this ancient yet modern artform. After viewing historic and contemporary mandalas we will do guided exercises in order to prepare ourselves for personalized finished pieces.
